40 Years of Boulder Beer Co
June 20th 2019
We are 1 month away from our 40th Anniversary Celebration! Follow along each week as we try to recap the last 40 years for you.
(1) In 1979, when founders David Hummer & Stick Ware were issued a brewers license there were only 42 other breweries in operation. Now there’s over 7,400 breweries!
(2) Where was the perfect location to start a brewery? A goatshed! Al Nelson (a friend of the founders) allowed for the first brewhouse to be in his goatshed just north of town in the Hygiene area. The goats remained on the farm and played their part in the brewery by being the Official Bottle-Openers of Boulder Beer Co. They all had bottle openers on their collars!
(3) The first beers were bottled and bought in wooden crates that required a deposit. Hummer’s son Julius made the crates for a summer job – now one of the crates is in the Smithsonian! Check out Charlie Papazian and the other early supporters of Boulder Beer Co!

We are 3 weeks away from our 40th Anniversary Celebration! Follow along each week as we try to recap the last 40 years for you.
(4) In 1984 we upgraded from a Goatshed in northeast Boulder to this beauty of a building on Wilderness Place. We were the first inhabitants of the circle and had some killer views to prove it!
(5&6) If you were to walk into Boulder Beer in the 80’s you would see a carpeted lobby – complete with white furniture and indoor plants. Our Pub was just a tasting room back then with 4 different beers on tap – Boulder Porter, Boulder Bitter, Boulder Stout, and Boulder Extra Pale Ale. By 1990, Stick and David took a step back so they could focus on their professional careers as astrophysicists at University of Colorado Boulder. Gina Day then stepped in as CEO and has been with the company ever since.!
