Mug Shots - Evan Franklin
Take a peek beyond the beer you love to drink with our blog series titled, "Mug Shots." There are a lot of folks here at Boulder Beer who play a huge role in our day to day success. This is our way of introducing you to the team that makes it all happen. It’s time for you to meet our newest brewer, Evan Franklin!
Evan was born and raised in Western North Carolina with the nearest city being Asheville. After he graduated high school he hiked the Appalachian Trail – at the same time as our Boulder sales rep Adam! They never crossed paths but some may say it’s fate they both found their way to Boulder Beer.
Working in breweries for the past 10 years, Evan has seen it all. The first brewery he worked at was in Montana, where he began his journey in the brewing industry as a server. From there Evan has worked as a cook, spent time in packaging, and eventually landed a job as a brewer. He is passionate about homebrew and says that “it’s all about the effort you put into the brew.” When asked what the percentage of good vs. bad homebrews he’s produced he said “If you give your brew 100% effort there is a 95% chance of success.”
The University of Colorado Boulder brought him to Colorado 9 years ago. He graduated with a degree in Biology, which comes in handy as a brewer. When Evan first moved to Boulder he lived 3 blocks from Boulder Beer, so he was familiar with the good vibes everyone at the brewery had. He was hired as a brewer here in March and “enjoys learning about brewing on a much bigger scale than (he’s) used to and all of the nuances that come along with that. The people and culture are definitely a huge part of why I was drawn to Boulder Beer in the first place.”
When Evan isn’t brewing at home or at work he enjoys hiking, rock climbing, skiing, and playing music with his wife, Jocelyn. They both worked at Eldora Ski Resort in Nederland, CO and met at an open jam in town. Both Jocelyn and Evan play guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, upright base, and the ukulele – maybe we’ll see the duo on the Boulder Beer patio stage next summer! They welcomed their first child, Olivier, into the world 5 months ago and currently live in the little mountain town where they met – Nederland.
As somewhat of a longtime regular, Evan’s favorite Boulder Beer brews include Planet Porter, Buffalo Gold (“the original of craft beer”) and now Due East. If he’s eating at the pub his go-to menu item is the Left Coast Chicken Wrap with Cajun Tots. Evan is really looking forward to dialing in the ins and outs of the pilot system and working over at Boulder Beer on Walnut’s R&D facility. He wants to continually explore new and old styles/techniques to bring you something unexpected.
